Violinist Korbinian Altenberger is rapidly earning critical attention and performance experience in his growing musical career, appearing on concert stages throughout Europe and in the U.S., Asia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Born in Munich, Mr. Altenberger began his violin studies in his native Germany, attending first the Mozarteum Salzburg in Austria and later the Musikhochschule Köln, where his principal teacher was Charles-Andre Linale. Mr. Altenberger received further degrees from the New England Conservatory as a student of Donald Weilerstein, and is currently enrolled at the Thornton School of Music at USC where he continues his studies with Midori Goto as a Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Scholarship recipient.
Represented by Astral Artists since 2005, Mr. Altenberger recently made both his concerto and recital debuts in Philadelphia under its auspices. He has also appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Auckland Philharmonia, Brno Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Elgin Symphony, Göttingen Symphony, Haddonfield Symphony (now Symphony in C), Halle Philharmonic, Kassel Chamber Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, New England Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire. A winner of several top competition prizes, Mr. Altenberger was an Artist-in-Residence at the State Orchestra of Eisenach, Germany, and has served as concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under Mariss Jansons, and of Köln’s WDR Radio Symphony Orchestra under Semyon Bychkov. Most recently he has performed recitals in France, Germany, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Mr. Altenberger has collaborated with numerous distinguished artists and has appeared at such notable summer festivals as Schleswig-Holstein, Great Lakes and Marlboro.
Mr. Altenberger’s concert engagements in the 2009-2010 season include appearances in Philadelphia under Astral, in New York with the Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra and the Omega Ensemble, and the IRIS Chamber Orchestra in Memphis. Increasingly Mr. Altenberger is involved in musical community engagement; he has worked with Live Music Now! in Europe, Partners in Performance in the U.S. and Music Sharing in Japan. In 2007, he performed in a chamber music and community engagement tour of Cambodia and is also a regular participant in musical outreach projects in the Philadelphia and Los Angeles areas. His recording of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3 with the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra was released by the Bella Musica label in Germany.
