The Biava Quartet (violinists Austin Hartman and Hyunsu Ko, violist Mary Persin, and cellist Gwendolyn Krosnick) joined the Astral Artists roster as a winner of its 2009 National Auditions. Astral presents the ensemble on its Philadelphia Brahms Festival in November 2009. Recognized as one of today’s most exciting young American string quartets, the Quartet is the winner of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and top prizes at the Premio Borciani and London International Competitions. The ensemble recently completed the Lisa Arnhold Quartet Residency at The Juilliard School, having previously held the same position with the Tokyo Quartet at Yale. Recipient of a 2006 Chamber Music America grant in collaboration with the Hill and Hollow Chamber Music Series, the Biava Quartet has performed to acclaim in Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, and the Baroque Art Hall in Seoul. Other recent highlights include appearances at the Mostly Mozart and Aspen music festivals, the Chautauqua Institution, and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. Recently, the Quartet was featured in the inaugural concerts of Pro Musica Hebraica, a new organization founded for the dissemination of Jewish art music. As ensemble-in-residence at the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society, the ensemble premièred two works by David Stock and Albert Glinsky. The Biava Quartet has recorded for the Naxos and Cedille labels, has been featured in Strings and Strad magazines, and was the subject of a PBS documentary film. The Quartet was selected to perform in Chamber Music America’s National Conference Showcase in January 2010.
